DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Students collected £325 to the Haiti appeal (and rising) Contributions were from students and their families, staff and visitors. We are very pleased to be able to support the DEC appeal – and are certain that our contribution will help to save lives and help with the support of the earthquake victims.

Year 11
Hospitality students are continuing to sell pizzas and cookies this week. They are to be made and served as a component of their coursework, but they want to sell at a profit and send the proceeds to the Haiti appeal.

A message from the Bursar...

New Building - We have now occupied the new building for 4 months and we have all settled well.  There are still the inevitable teething problems that all new buildings suffer from although we appear to be experiencing them all together at times!  We work closely with the builder and the architects to try and resolve these as quickly as possible.  Some take a little longer than we would hope for and we are thankful for your patience and support.  On the whole most issues are resolved quickly.

Demolition – This was delayed for a few weeks recently due to some asbestos removal, however, it is now resolved safely and we are back on the schedule and progressing well. The building should be flattened within the next couple of weeks and the debris removed.  All of the demolition is recycled in one format or another, thus decreasing our carbon footprint.

Once the site is cleared of debris the landscaping will commence and should be complete before the end of the Summer Term.  We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the grassed areas will not be able to be walked over for some months and some of the pitches will be fenced off for at least a year in order that the grass grows to the recommenced levels etc.

Launched in January 2009 by Becta - the government agency for technology in schools - the Charter process leads and supports schools on a four-stage journey towards excellence.

Safer Internet Day-9 February 2010
Safer Internet Day is a European-wide initiative and is the one day in the calendar that will give a focus to internet safety issues such as cyberbullying, dealing with upsetting and illegal content online, sexual abuse and grooming. There are a range activities taking place across the week and students at Monkseaton will take part (from Monday 8th – Friday 12th February) and across the continent to help protect young people online. Parents can get involved too.

Virtual School Gate
A new scheme offers parents free access to a social networking site that links them to their children's schools and other parents.

Aimed at busy mums and dads, the scheme is government-backed and run by the Netmums group who hope that "it will become a hub for every secondary school in the UK to create a dialogue between the school and parents".

Described by children's secretary Ed Balls as a "virtual school gate", it's designed to boost parent's involvement, give them info on their kid's education and be a place to discuss issues.

Balls said: "We need to find innovative ways of involving parents in schools, particularly secondary schools. I like to think of it as a 'virtual school gate' - where parents can chat to each other online, find out what is happening in the schools and pass on useful information to each other".

We are very interested in how this site might help our parents in addition to the support we currently offer as a school. Here is the link to our school site on netmums:
Engaging Parents - Case Study
During our consultation day in October you may have seen a film crew wandering around the building. They were a team sent by Microsoft on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

I have uploaded the overview film on to our YouTube channel (see previous post) or click here.
You can also read the written Case Study in pdf format.
