Website, Blog and Parents site
The feedback I have had about this blog has been very positive- It started last September and the hit rate has risen each month.
You may have noticed that I have not updated much recently... this is because the ICT development team and myself have been working hard to plan an improved look...
We aim to impove the website, blog and we hope to transform the parents' secure site to bring all parents and students more timely and meaningful information.

If you have any suggestions then please feel free to email them to me... simon.thompson@monkseaton.org.uk

Path to entrance opens
After months of work, the impressive path to the school entrance is opened for all.

Jess Train - A unique and special young person

On behalf of our staff and students, we would like to express our deep shock and sadness at the sudden death of Jess, who was a much-loved and popular member of the school community. Our heartfelt condolences go to her family and close friends at this time. We are talking with students and staff to help them to come to terms with this extremely sad newsWe are working closely with the local authority to provide specialist support and counselling in school for those who need additional support at this time.

We are also offering support and advice to the parents of all students. We have sent a leaflet with advice to all families You can access an online version by Clicking here. We will be opening the school on Sunday 2 May 2010 for a drop in for all parents and their children to offer the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings and visit the area in school we have set aside for messages students have written.

Revision- How to help your child revise
It's exam season for almost all of our students in the school. We know that all parents will be trying to support their children's revision at home to ensure they achieve the best possible grades this summer.

Many teachers from Monkseaton have contributed to this short guide which we hope will help parents to talk to their children about ways in which they can effectively revise.

We welcome any feedback you may have on this: email me: 96thompsons@monkseaton.org.uk

Consultation about the timings of the school day
We have now started the consultation process. The Governing Body will be deciding whether to keep the current school day, or change back to the old school day. We are hoping all families, students and staff will respond to the survey.

All students and staff have received an email with a link to the online survey to enable us to collect all responses and opinions.

Parent/carers have also been sent an email with a link to the survey. If you haven't received this then we must not have your correct email address- please contact us by clicking "Login" (above) and "Request Parent Password". To ensure all parents can respond, we have also sent a paper form out to all parent/carers in the post.

Timetable - Consultations and Media
There's been a lot of media reports in the last week about our pilot timetable as part of our agenda for innovation. We carried out a consultation before starting that pilot and will be carrying out a second consultation soon to find out the views of students, staff and parents on how it has gone and to help us plan next years timetable which begins this June.

Within the news stories are comments from 2 leading professors:

Professor Russell Foster, a neuroscientist at Oxford University and one of the academics involved with the Monkseaton study, has proved that teenagers follow different sleep patterns from adults.  Children who struggle to get up early are not lazy, he says.

“Teenagers have a biological predisposition to go to bed late and to get up late, so if you can start the school day later you should do so,” said Foster, a world expert in circadian rhythms.  “Adolescent body clocks can be delayed by up to four hours so they don’t start to function properly until 10 am or, in some cases, as late as noon.”

Professor Till Roenneberg (Berlin University), who is an expert on studying sleep, said it was "nonsense" to start the school day early. He says:

"It is about the way our biological clock settles into light and dark cycles. This clearly becomes later and later in adolescence."

Prof Roenneberg said if teenagers are woken up too early they miss out on the most essential part of their sleep.

"Sleep is essential to consolidate what you learn"

A Message from the Governors
More than a whole class of new  students have joined the school since we moved into the new building. We welcome them all, and their families and wish you a happy and successful time at Monkseaton.

Applications for places for September 2010 are already well up on previous years. If you know of students who are thinking of applying to join us, please advise them to get their request in early to avoid disappointment!

DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Students collected £325 to the Haiti appeal (and rising) Contributions were from students and their families, staff and visitors. We are very pleased to be able to support the DEC appeal – and are certain that our contribution will help to save lives and help with the support of the earthquake victims.

Year 11
Hospitality students are continuing to sell pizzas and cookies this week. They are to be made and served as a component of their coursework, but they want to sell at a profit and send the proceeds to the Haiti appeal.
